School readiness

School Readiness means that children have developed a broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.

This includes speech and language development, social development, emotional development, the ability to carry out some self-help tasks independently e.g. use the toilet and choose activities to take part in.

Attending nursery is a great way to prepare your child for school. You can apply for nursery places here.

Some schools have their own lists of activities they would like children to be able to do before they start school. Check with your child’s school.

What to do if your child is struggling at school?

Starting school is an exciting time in a child’s life. However, some children can find it tricky to settle in, or struggle with school life. If your child is struggling, talk to them about it and speak to the school as soon as possible. Your child’s class teacher is the best person to speak to in the first instance. They will help you and support your child.
